Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
2 Days & 1 Night
|
From US$420 person
The short 2-day Inca Trail is an excellent option for those who wish to enjoy the magic of the Inca Trail in less time. This more accessible version is ideal if you have not managed to obtain the permit for the classic 4-day version. Without the demands of long hikes or high altitude camping, this trek offers an unforgettable experience at every step.
During these two days, you will travel 12 kilometers of the historic Inca trail, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and an impressive variety of flora and fauna. One of the greatest rewards of the tour is the view of Machu Picchu at sunset from Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), an exclusive experience for those who take this trek.
As only 500 people a day are allowed on the trail, including guides, porters and cooks, permits tend to run out quickly. However, the short Inca Trail is an option available without the need to book months in advance. This route offers the best of the Inca Trail in a simpler and more accessible way.
The highest point of the trail is Inti Punku, at 2,730 meters above sea level. We recommend spending at least 2 or 3 days in Cusco before starting to acclimatize to the altitude.
Day 1: Cusco – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Inti Punku – Aguas Calientes
We will start the day by picking you up at your hotel in Cusco and transferring you to the train station in Ollantaytambo. From there, you will board a train that will take you to Km 104, the starting point of the trek.
After a brief passport and permit check, we will begin the trek. The first part of the hike is a gradual ascent to Wiñay Wayna, a beautiful archaeological site whose name means “Forever Young” in Quechua. Here, our guide will give you a detailed tour of the site before enjoying lunch at the nearby campsite.
After lunch, we will continue to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), where you will witness a unique view of Machu Picchu at sunset. Afterwards, we will descend to the citadel to take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a basic hotel.
Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
Early in the morning, we will take a 25-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. There, our guide will give you a two-hour tour of the famous citadel, visiting the main sites such as the plaza, agricultural terraces and temples.
After the tour, you will have free time to explore at your own pace. If you have booked to climb the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountains, our guide will help you get to the starting point.
At the end of the day, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes to board the train to Ollantaytambo, where our team will be waiting for you to transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco.
If you prefer, you can enhance your train travel experience by opting for the Vistadome Train, which offers panoramic windows to better enjoy the scenery. Please let us know if you would like this option at the time of booking.
