Embark on an unforgettable 5-day adventure to the Manu National Reserve, starting from the historic city of Cusco. This journey will take you through the vibrant landscapes of the Andes and descend into the magical cloud forest, home to amazing biodiversity. From traditional agricultural rituals to fascinating wildlife, each day offers a new surprise in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon.
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Bamboo Lodge
At 5:00 AM, we depart early from Cusco, crossing the Andean valleys and visiting the Chullpas of Ninamarca, ancient burial towers that tell stories of the pre-Inca past. After breakfast in the charming village of Paucartambo, we will continue to Acjanaco, the highest point of our journey. From there, we will enter the cloud forest, a mystical place where you will marvel at the richness of the local flora and fauna, including the famous Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird. In the late afternoon, we will arrive at the cozy Bambú Lodge, where you can relax and enjoy an optional night walk, weather permitting.
Day 2: Bambú Lodge – Manu River – Palotoa Lodge
We start the day with a visit to the Pico’s de Oz Bird Center, where hummingbirds and other exotic species will welcome you. Then, we will explore a coca plantation before continuing to the Atalaya River, where we will board a boat that will take us downstream, observing the diverse wildlife along the banks. After a delicious lunch at Palotoa Lodge, we will venture on a night walk to discover the creatures that come to life when the sun goes down.
Day 3: Palotoa Lodge – Shyntuya Native Community
After a revitalizing breakfast, we will continue our exploration of the jungle, focusing our attention on observing monkeys and other mammals. After lunch, we will embark to the hot springs of the Shyntuya Native Community, where you can relax in a unique natural environment. On the way back, we will stop to enjoy an unforgettable sunset and, with luck, meet the capybara, the largest rodent in the world. The night will be reserved for an exciting walk in search of frogs, bats and snakes.
Day 4: Palotoa Lodge – Soga de Oro Lodge
In the morning, we will board the boat again to reach the Soga de Oro ecolodge. Along the way, keep your eyes open for more wildlife along the river. After lunch, we will visit Lake Machu Huasi, a birdwatcher’s paradise, where the hoatzin, a prehistoric-looking bird, is the star of the show. At nightfall, we will return to the lodge to share stories around a campfire under the stars.
Day 5: Soga de Oro Lodge – Cusco
The last day will begin early in the morning with a spectacular parrot and macaw observation at the clay lick. After enjoying this vibrant spectacle of nature, we will have breakfast, pack and take our boat back to the Atalaya River dock. From there, private transportation will take us back to Cusco, with a stop for lunch at the Ajanacu lookout point. We will arrive in Cusco in the afternoon, putting an end to this incredible adventure.
